The Dragonborn expansion for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim introduces players to Solstheim, an island filled with unique factions and intriguing side quests. Among these storylines, the conflict surrounding Thirsk Mead Hall stands out as one of the most memorable encounters on the island. Choosing to assist the local tribe of creatures opens up a distinct path that leads directly into the quest known as The Chief of Thirsk Hall.
Starting the Quest and Meeting the Riekling Leader
To begin this questline, players must travel to Thirsk Mead Hall located on the eastern side of Solstheim and approach without hostility. Inside the hall, you will encounter an unusually articulate Riekling Chief who asks for your assistance. Speaking with the leader initiates a series of tasks designed to prove your usefulness to the tribe.
Your initial tasks involve completing a few practical errands for the current occupants of the hall. First, you must locate and return Bilgemuck, the Chief's escaped bristlaback boar, by feeding it meat. Following that success, the Chief will ask you to gather a supply of scathecraw plants to support the tribe.
The Final Confrontation and Key Decisions
After completing the preparation tasks, the Riekling Chief requests your aid in eliminating the exiled Nord warriors living nearby. Joining the attack on the Nord camp permanently settles the control of Thirsk Mead Hall. Taking this action closes off the alternative path to restore the original Nord inhabitants.
Once the Nord camp is cleared, the Riekling Chief turns on you and demands a single combat duel to the death. The Chief recognizes your power as a threat to his command and seeks to eliminate you to keep his position. Defeating the Chief in combat officially earns you title of leader over the hall.
Consequences and Long-Term Rewards
Completing the quest provides unique gameplay benefits that assist you throughout your adventures in Skyrim. As the new leader, you gain access to Thirsk Mead Hall as a functional hub and resource location. Furthermore, groups of friendly Rieklings will randomly appear during combat situations anywhere in the world to assist you.
However, aiding the tribe prevents players from unlocking the Nord vendors and services associated with the hall. Players who rely on heavy armor training or specific trader goods may prefer siding with the Nords instead. Weighing these perks helps players determine which outcome best suits their current character build.
